Luminous SkyCeilings have been installed in Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Bournemouth, United Kingdom.
According to a story in the Bournemouth Daily Echo:
Hospital patients in Bournemouth are among the first in the country to benefit from special ceiling tiles to help them relax during medical procedures.
SkyCeiling tiles, designed to engage the eye and relax patients, have been installed in the interventional radiology department at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The bright tiles, obtained through funding from the hospital's League of Friends, give the effect of a more airy and calming environment.
They were introduced to provide a distraction for patients who often have to remain awake throughout procedures.
Lynne Teece, lead interventional radiographer at the hospital, said: "Since the installation of the SkyCeilings we have had many positive comments from patients, staff and visitors."
"They provide an excellent focus for patients having procedures in addition to proving an obvious talking point. This helps to diffuse some of the tension and anxiety which patients often feel."
Patient responses have included the following comments:
"Very relaxing — having the images tiles to concentrate on took my mind off of the procedure."
"It made me feel very relaxed under otherwise tense circumstances — the distraction was very welcome."
"I felt really relaxed being able to look at the image tiles, like I was somewhere else."
"It was lovely to look up and see the sky and trees above — I could imagine myself being elsewhere."
