Barretos Childrens Hospital
Barretos Cancer Hospital (BCH) in northern Sao Paulo, Brazil, is one of the biggest tertiary cancer hospitals in South America featuring the largest cancer screening program in the world. BCH is a partnership institution of MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and UCLA that also features a 26-bed tertiary care children’s hospital.
Marie Wikoff, principal at Wikoff Design Studio, was selected to create the interior décor for this 50 million dollar project that included several playing waiting rooms for children and their families. Noting that natural environments offer unique restorative qualities, the challenge was to bring some of these attributes into enclosed spaces, areas of the hospital that had no access to daylight or green environments.
The designer chose soft, doughnut-shaped ottomans a in a variety of bright colors to create fun objects in the room that in some cases integrated easily with wall murals mimicking an outdoor green and blue landscape. To further enhance the playful motif, a couple of Luminous SkyCeilings framed the waiting room playgrounds.
One Luminous SkyCeiling offered an illusory sky above a faux tree, framing a colorful landscape mural, while the other, in a separate room, provided an unexpected underwater vantage point from where one can observe Sea Turtles swimming overhead.
Together, these two illusions of nature provide children and their families an engaging interior environment that offers a playful space to explore and discover.
