Jikei University School of Medicine
The Jikei University School of Medicine in Tokyo is one of the three major private medical schools in Japan. The university includes a graduate school for medical research, three training schools for nurses, and four hospitals.

Jikei’s nursing school has a notable pedigree. The founder, Kanechiro Takaki (1849-1920), who studied as a naval cadet at London’s St. Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, was determined to develop the same kind of modern nursing training that he observed at the Nightingale Nursing School attached to the St. Thomas’ Hospital.
In 1844, he invited the American missionary Mary L. Reade to be the instructor for Japan’s first program in modern nursing education. The first graduating class only had five students, but the Empress, as hospital president, attended the graduation ceremony.
In addition, the spiritual basis of Tokyo Jikeikai, its name at the time, is said to be modeled on the compassionate heart of Buddhist tradition.
