Intensive Care Units deal with patients whose vital signs needs to be closely monitored.

Unfortunately, the sophisticated medical equipment that monitors such signals often provoke more anxiety than relief due to their ever present battery of sounds.

With this stressful environment in mind, the hospital’s resuscitation team at Southern Lyon Hospital in Lyon, France, in conjunction with the Hematology Department, sought to transform the patient experience in the center’s isolated resuscitation rooms.

Partnering with Sky Factory France, the team was able to bring an architectural feature unknown to contemporary emergency rooms: a clear view to open skies.

By using a combination of techniques involving photographic composition, high resolution digital images, the color temperature of light, and patented architectural reveals, fine artists and craftspeople at the Sky Factory’s are able to recreate a simulated line of sight to open blue skies that is both visually alluring and spatially accurate.

“The [Personal Revelation SkyCeiling] provides a touch of daylight,” says Magali and Amelie, shift nurses at the hospital’s ICU. “The installation provides a welcome point of reference for patients about their proximity to a natural exterior.”

Patients that just endured a trying time can focus their attention on a view reminiscent of better days spent outdoors, marveling at the sky.

The project was funded by the Association of Life Aplastic Anemia and Leukemia (AVAL).
