University of Leipzig Hospital
The University of Leipzig Hospital is Germany's second oldest medical training center, housed within the campus of one of the world's oldest universities. With over 5,000 employees, over 3,000 students, and treating more than 370,000 patients each year, the medical center is one of Germany's most influential research and training institutions.
Anchored by its deep historical roots, the university hospital reaches towards excellence in healthcare delivery by embracing the latest, evidence-based technologies. In line with this approach, The new radiotherapy suite features a large, custom-designed Luminous SkyCeiling, providing an engaging presence of real sky for patients and staff, alike.
Many studies over the past several decades point to the significant healing benefits of views to nature, either real or simulated, in healthcare settings. The stress-alleviating effects of viewing nature take place within minutes, making nature scenes especially valuable in treatment areas where patients are not sedated, but may be experiencing some anxiety or discomfort.
Sky scenes are especially appropriate in the radiology suite. We are accustomed to experiencing the expanse of blue sky overhead, as a patient will experience the SkyCeiling upon entering the suite. Then, laying down for treatment, the patient is engaged (the scientific terminology is "positively distracted") by the exquisite detail, color, and lifelike presence of sky, clouds and foliage. The radiotherapy session becomes a memorable experience of nature's enriching beauty.
