Winship Infusion Center
Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University is Georgia's first and only cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute. Founded in 1937, the Institute's mission has been to bring together researchers, physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, engineers, and social workers with the goal of preventing, treating, and curing cancer.
An impressive 14' Circular Luminous SkyCeiling was installed in the Winship Infusion Center's central check-in area, an interior space with no views to the outside. The response from the Infusion Center staff and patients has been overwhelmingly positive. "It brings the outside in," said Beth Parks, a multiple myeloma survivor from Avondale Estates. "You feel like you're outside."
That's exactly what the architect, Gil May, wanted – a refreshing and relaxing environment. May, whose firm, May Architecture and Interiors, oversaw the re-design of the infusion center and the installation of the virtual skylight, worked closely with staff and patient groups to create an atmosphere that reflected the needs of all for a stress-relieving environment.
Sophisticated biophilic design elements, like the Luminous SkyCeiling, can provide much of the same value as a real skylight, and trigger the benefits of the psycho-physiological relaxation response.
