The Texas Oncology – Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, which opened in the spring of 2011, is the largest outpatient cancer center in north Texas. With an emphasis on enhancing patient care and experience, this state-of-the-art center houses the practice’s broad capabilities in radiation and medical oncology.
Designed by Perkins + Will, the semi-circular building embraces a soft core of landscaping, viewable through the building’s 10-story concave glass wall, and shields this side of the facility from the freeway running behind the site in downtown Dallas.
Throughout the patient areas the colors are rich, soft, and natural. Plants abound. Carpets soften the sound of the busy facility. In the radiation and infusion therapy areas, as well as the general reception area on the 4th floor, patients, staff, and visitors enjoy the engaging natural views and sounds of nature provided by the Sky Factory eScape™ Digital Cinema Displays. Playing a day’s worth of non-repeating nature scenes, each eScape brings the sights, sound, and rhythms of beautiful natural locations to the facility’s occupants.
Throughout the center, people are continually enchanted by the vivid realistic views to nature. They comment on how much more soothing the eScape is compared to a television playing the news. They say they feel more relaxed, that the eScape makes the tedium of therapy go by more quickly, and they feel refreshed after viewing it. These are exactly the kinds of experiences one would expect from a powerful biophilic architectural element.
